An autopsy has confirmed the body found August 11th near the Riverside
Cemetary maintainence building was that of 44 year old Robert Strohm of
Marshalltown. Strohm was originally reported missing July 28th. A search
by volunteers along the Iowa River August 2nd did not find anything.
Services for Strohm are pending.
The Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce will hold a School Board Candidates
Forum Thursday at Noon at the Fisher Community Center. The 4 Marshalltown
School Board candidates and the Iowa Valley Board will answer questions from
the public.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey awarded Century Farms recognition
at the Iowa State Fair for area farms. Phyllis Mohr, Dorothy Lynch, Michael and
Barbara Dunn, and David and Judy Eggers received certificates and yard signs
in recognition of the status. A total of 344 farms were recognized, bringing the
total to over 16,000 Century Farms in Iowa.
The Farm Progress show in Boone is attracting large number of visitors, including
those from other countries. The U.S. Ag secretary will attend tomorrow, appearing
on a 1PM radio Show.
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - The president of Iowa Central Community
College in Fort Dodge will meet with the college's broad of
trustees tomorrow to talk about his conduct. At issue is a
photograph that shows Robert Paxton with a small beer keg over a
young woman's open mouth in a boat.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say investigations into a
University of Iowa professor will be dropped now that he's dead.
Arthur Miller was accused of offering higher grades to female
students in exchange for sexual favors.
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - A Nebraska man who was shot and
wounded after a short car chase in Council Bluffs could be
extradited to Iowa today. Officials say a trooper shot Matthew
Loth, of Plattsmouth, yesterday afternoon when refused to turn off
his car and turned it toward the trooper in a "threatening
manner." Loth is being held in Nebraska.
BRANDON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have identified the driver of a
van that headed the wrong way on Interstate 380 and caused a deadly
head-on crash. The van driven by James Horning of Central City hit
a car driven by Carrie McGill of Jesup on August 14th. Both died in
the wreck.
DENVER (AP) - Democratic governors, including Iowa's Chet
Culver, are lining up to criticize Republican John McCain and offer
a chorus of praise for their party's nominee, Barack Obama. Culver,
who spoke at Democratic National Convention in Denver yesterday,
sought to paint McCain as an insider, tainted with special
interests and sponsored by energy companies.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Tax revenues in Iowa for July are down
11 percent from a year ago, signaling a cautionary sign for the
state's economy. Most of the revenue downturn is linked to
accounting issues, but officials say the figures also show Iowa
hasn't escaped the nation's economic troubles.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A death investigation is under way in
Cedar Rapids. Police say Jerry Hurt died after a man on a bicycle
rode up, got off the bike, picked up a blunt object and hit Hurt in
the head. The search is on for the suspect.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - It's a big welcome home for Shawn
Johnson. The Olympic gymnast was greeted last night by a crowd of
7,000 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Johnson took one gold and
three silver medals in Beijing.
