Friday Sports Briefs

Rain has caused an adjustment to the Girls State Softball Tournament in Ft Dodge.  Over one
inch of rain fell in a half-hour time mid afternoon Thursday.  The late games were postponed to
today...with all consolation bracket games cancelled for the balance of the tournament.
The 4A opening games will be played starting at 430 today...with their semi-finals on Saturday
morning.  The semi-finals will be played today in the other classes. 
Saturday's championship games start at Noon.

Today marks the opening of the Baseball State Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Game times today are at 11 and 1.  The Iowa Cubs have a night game scheduled for both today '
and Saturday.

The Iowa Games opening ceremonies are scheduled for tonight at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
The competiton starts early Saturday morning..continues Sunday at venues in Ames..Boone. and Nevada.
The balance of the Iowa Games will be next weekend.

GUTTENBERG, Iowa (AP) - An eastern Iowa man who became the first
Chicago Cubs fan to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley
Field has died from bone cancer.
     Dustin Eglseder passed away in his Guttenberg home Wednesday. He
was 23.
     Eglseder was chosen from among thousands of entrants to sing the
song during the seventh-inning stretch against Pittsburgh on Sept.
21, 2007. The Cubs organization then invited Eglseder and his
family to a convention in Chicago in January. He again sang the
classic baseball tune, this time to a crowd of thousands of fans,
coaches and players at the opening ceremony.
     Eglseder was diagnosed with bone cancer in the spring of 2007.
    
    
 IOWA-TICKETS
     Hawkeyes put tickets on sale
    
     IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Single-game tickets for five Iowa
football games went on sale to the general public Thursday.
     The Hawkeyes still have tickets left for home dates against
Maine, Florida International, Northwestern, Penn State and Purdue.
Iowa's games against Iowa State and Wisconsin are sold out.
     Single-game tickets for the five remaining games is $50 per
seat. Iowa also has some season tickets and three-game packages
available.
     The Hawkeyes, who have sold out their last 30 home games, open
at Kinnick Stadium against Maine on Aug. 30.
    
 CINCINNATI (AP) - The New York Mets moved into a tie with
Philadelphia atop the National League East by rallying with four in
the ninth to beat Cincinnati 10-8 for the 10th straight victory.
David Wright provided the tying two-run home run off Francisco
Cordero and Carlos Delgado delivered the go-ahead RBI.
 
     BALTIMORE (AP) - Gary Sheffield and Brandon Inge (ihnj) hit
two-run homers, Marcus Thames (tihmz) added a solo shot, and the
Detroit Tigers resumed their playoff drive by defeating Baltimore
6-5 to move a game over the .500 mark. The Tigers moved within 6
and a-half games of first-place Chicago in the AL Central.
 
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have picked up
another starting pitcher for their stretch run. The Phils acquired
right-hander Joe Blanton from Oakland for 3 minor leaguers.
 
     SOUTHPORT, England (AP) - Second-round play is under way at the
137th British Open. The first-day leaders were Rocco Mediate
(MEE'-dee-ayt), Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby, who were the
only three golfers in the field to break par yesterday at 1-under
69.
 
     SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Christina Kim shot a 9-under 63 to take
a one-stroke lead at the State Farm Classic, a tournament she just
missed winning last year. Kim has two career wins and 30 top-10
finishes in her career and calls this tourney "absolutely
magical."
