Emerson Process, Fisher Controls was recognized at the
Marshalltown Chamber's 110th annual meeting last night.
Fisher was honored with the Community Impact Award.
Kristin Monroe, owner of Utlimate Web Design, received the
volunteer of the year award.
Today and tomorrow, over 65 teams will be competing for
the championship of the annual Barbeque Contest held this
year at the International Raceway Go-Kart grounds on 18th
Avenue on Marshalltown's east side. The competition will
begin at 11 AM Saturday morning.
The Marshall County Relay for Life is this weekend at the
Marshalltown High School Track.
The Gladbrook Corn Carnival has a number of events
through the weekend.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The first half of 2008 is one for the
record books -- for wet weather. State climatologist Harry Hillaker
estimates by yesterday afternoon, the statewide average was 23.8
inches of precipitation. That tops the previous record of 23.55
inches in 1951. More showers and thunderstorms are likely today,
with heavy rain possible.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Iowa homeland security officials say
FEMA homes will be sent to Cedar Rapids to help with temporary
housing for flood victims. Spokesman Brett Voorhees says he expects
the first manufactured homes to arrive in two to three weeks.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Damage to Cedar Rapids' wastewater
treatment plant could run in the millions. Floodwaters covered
three-fourths of the plant, and officials say it could take six
months to get it back to normal operation.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Governor Culver has called a news
conference this afternoon to update the recovery efforts across
Iowa. It's set for 1:30 p.m. at the Statehouse in Des Moines.
VILLISCA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of
a 45-year-old southwest Iowa woman. Investigators say Kim Bowers
McCue, of Villisca, was confirmed dead yesterday morning by
emergency officials who responded to a 911 call. Authorities say
there are no obvious signs of foul play but the investigation is
very active. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A state collaborative raising private
funds for flood and storm victims has secured pledges of nearly $3
million so far. Yesterday in Cedar Rapids, officials including Iowa
first lady Mari Culver presented checks totaling $425,000 to
eastern Iowa community-based organizations.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Secretary of State Michael Mauro says
turnout for this year's primary election was about 27,000 votes
higher than the last comparable primary four years ago. Mauro says
930 voters took advantage of the state's new same-day voter
registration law. It allows voters to register on the day of the
primary.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Jones County sheriff's officials say
an 85-year-old old man has been killed in a lawn mower accident
near Onslow. Authorities did not immediately release the name of
the man. They say he was killed this week when a lawnmower
overturned onto him in a ditch at his home.
