Drake wins MVC tournament !

     Cox, Emmenecker lead Drake past Illinois St. to first MVC title
   
     ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Emmenecker wound up a dazzling weekend
with 16 points and six assists and Jonathan Cox had 20 points as
No. 20 Drake beat Illinois State for its first Missouri Valley
Conference tournament title yesterday.
     Drake routed the Red Birds 79-to-49.
     Klayton Korver added 10 points for Drake (28-4), which shot 55.6
percent and became the first school to sweep the regular-season and
tournament titles since co-champ Creighton in 2002.
     The title game matched rookie head coaches from programs picked
to finish near the bottom of the conference.
     Drake is the first top seed to win the tournament in eleven
seasons.
   
 IOWA WRESTLING
     Hawkeyes clinch Big Ten wrestling team title
   
     DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The University of Iowa wrestling team
pushed ahead Minnesota to win its 32nd Big Ten team title
yesterday.
     The Hawkeyes beat Minnesota 127 to 112.5 at the conference
championship in Minneapolis. Sophomore Brent Metcalf became Iowa's
101st Big Ten Champion by winning the 149-pound title. Nine
Hawkeyes qualified for the NCAA Championships.
     Metcalf was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships
and Big Ten Wrestler of the Year.
     Iowa coach Tom Brands was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
     Senior Mark Perry lost in the 165-pound finals match. Senior
Matt Fields along with sophomores Joe Slaton, Jay Borschel and
Phillip Keddy also helped the team by placing third in their
individual weight classes.
   
Make it two in  a  row for the Iowa State Wrestling team  as they won the Big 12 tournament
over the weekend.  Four ISU wrestlers won titles:  133-Nick Fanthorpe...141-NicK Gallick....
157-Cyler Sanderson...184-Jake Varner.   
The Cyclones advanced 10 wrestlers to the NCAA tournament, March 20-22 in St Louis,
Missouri.  It was the 13th conference title for ISU.  The last time four champions were crowned
was 1996.  The last time ISU won consecutive titles was 1979-1980.

The Postseason tournaments begin this week:

The ISU Women (#8 seed) face #9 Colorado at Noon Tuesday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

The ISU men (#11 seed) face #6 Texas A&M at 830 PM Thursday at Sprint Center in Kansas City.
