A CLOSER LOOK AT THE FIELD
WHO’S NO. 1: Johnston is top-rated and top seeded and the Dragons are attempting to be the first Class 4A teams to go unbeaten since the tournament went to four classes in 1981. There have been seven previous championship teams that have gone undefeated – Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (18-0, 1953); Muscatine (21-0, 1957), Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (23-0, 1960), Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (18-0, 1962), Beckman, Dyersville (21-0, 1968); Kee, Lansing (47-0, 1973 1A) and Wilton (42-0, 2005 2A). It won’t be easy for the Dragons – six other teams who finished in the IBCA top 10 are in the tourney field – Sioux City North, second; Burlington, third; number six Ankeny, seventh rated Cedar Rapids Kennedy, eighth ranked Southeast Polk, and number nine Dubuque Hempstead.
PREVIOUS CHAMPIONS: Johnston is one of five schools who have won a state baseball title. Marshalltown and Dubuque Hempstead have copped five and four respectively. Burlington has won two including the first ever summer tournament in 1946. Ankeny won the title in 1992.
HERE ALSO IN ‘07: Only two teams – Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Ankeny – return from last year’s tournament field. This is Kennedy’s third straight pilgrimage to the tournament and their seventh since 2000. For Ankeny, this is the Hawks’ fourth trip since 2004.
NEWKIDS ON THE BLOCK: Southeast Polk is the only newcomer in the tournament field. The seventh-rated Rams are the number six seed, but no stranger to rigorous competition. They had 9 games against teams that are in the tournament this year and five more against substate finalists. They are coached by Scott Belger, whose father Vic is number four on the all-time wins list at 920-319, and was his coach at Creston.
FIRST TIME COACHES: Johnston’s Randy Wee and Southeast Polk’s Scott Belger are coaches who will be appearing in their first ever state tournament. Wee is 249-150 with previous stops at Iowa Falls and Columbus Catholic, Waterloo. This is his final season as he moves into administration this fall. Belger is 312-245 with previous stops at Des Moines Hoover, ADM, Adel; and Savannah, MO.
DID YOU KNOW? (1) Sioux City North Junior Nick Tillo has 80 runs batted in thus far. That makes him third on the all-time single season best list. He trails Bishop Garrigan’s Brad Nelson (91 in 1999 – fourth best nationally) and Assumption’s Greg Thissen (84 in 1999). Both have played in major league farm chains – Nelson with the Brewers' Triple AAA franchise at Nashville and Thissen played in 2007 for the Nationals’ farm system at Potomac, VA.
(2) Dan Reid of Burlington brought Notre Dame Burlington to three tournaments and the 1982 title. This is his second trip with Grayhounds and his 31-year record of 688-387 is 14th on the all-time win list and eighth among active coaches.
